Health and Fitness Program
Description: Sports Coach or Mentor
STRONG GIRLS NEED STRONG WOMEN
The Health and Fitness Program is putting together it's final list of participants for the 2007-2008 Girls Sports Program. If you know of any schools that would like to participate or if you would like to be a coach or mentor please contact our Health and Fitness Director at
health@ggenyc.org.
We are also looking for a Program Coordinator Intern to work with us during the 2008-2009 school year:
- Organizing girls' sports programs (basketball, soccer, and boxing) and health workshops in schools and community organizations
- Organizing field trips to WNBA games and attending school basketball tournaments
- Facilitating a girls’ empowerment group
Description: Strong Girls Need Strong Women: Seeking Women Volunteers to Mentor Girls throughout NYC.
We are currently seeking women volunteers to serve as Mentors to girls, ages 9-14, on various teams in our basketball league, who attend public school throughout NYC. We have leagues in all five boroughs, so you would be placed with a conveniently located team. We welcome women who play and love basketball as well as those with no previous experience or interest in the sport!
Time frame: 1-2 days a week (depending on your availability) for approximately 2 hours a day, during the after-school hours of 3-5 or 4-6 (depending on which school you work with, as they get out at different times), from March through June. We will train you!
While GGE’s Health and Fitness Program strives to give girls the opportunity to engage in sports and fitness, we also make it more than just about the sport. Team mentors serve as role models and friends to each girl participating in the basketball league. Mentors remind the girls they work with that GGE not only gives them an opportunity to play sports, but also teaches them about what it actually means to be a girl in sports, health risk behaviors that they face on daily basis, and helps them develop into healthy, self-confident young women. You can make a difference in the lives of girls!

GGE is led by women, men and girls who volunteer their time. The girls of GGE would like to thank all of the wonderful women and men who have volunteered, interned and persistently worked to nurture young girls' self esteem and create opportunities for girls to play sports. GGE exists because of fantastic volunteers who are dedicated to girls' and womens' right to self-determination.

College Social Work Interns at GGE become involved in all aspects of grassroots non-profit work. Some GGE interns may be responsible for facilitating groups, organizing, policy research, community outreach, grant writing and fundraising. Because GGE is a small organization, interns have the opportunity to work with all staff members and, to some extent, self-design projects to fit their talents and interests.
Internships are unpaid. If requested, GGE will arrange a student’s high school or university to offer academic credit. Interns may start at anytime and are expected to work with GGE for at least 3 months. Part-time as well as full-time internships are available.
Winter and Spring Internships are now available! Apply online or email your resume and cover letter to jsmith@ggenyc.org. Please review this website for a summary of the work that we do. When applying, please indicate how you would like to help. Resumes without a cover letter will not be accepted.
