Girls for Gender Equity was made possible as a result of a petition signed by over 70 women and men living in the Bed-Stuy and Brownsville communities, asking Open Society Institute, Soros Foundation to bring gender equity to their neighborhoods. These 70 parents and other community members continue to participate, monitor and advise GGE on the needs of community girls, neighborhood schools and facilities on issues of gender-based discrimination and safety. These women, men and girls primarily make up GGE’s volunteers, Board of Directors and constituents.
