May:
Sisters in Strength program teens organized, in Paul Roberson HS, to combat a “no dance” policy the administration had created a few years earlier in response to violent incidents involving weapons and fighting at school functions. The Sisters in Strength participants wanted to hold a dance in order to raise money for a newly opened domestic violence shelter in the neighborhood, and were originally denied. After four months of advocating on behalf of the students of Paul Robeson High School and negotiating with the principal and assistant principal, the administration reversed the policy and the young women organized the fundraiser. They gave $500 to the domestic violence shelter, were recognized in the school for their work, and felt proud of their accomplishments.
