GGE

Community Organizing Events Archives 2002

February:

GGE and April DeGraw from the Women’s Sports Foundation celebrated the 16th annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day by organizing an all day event for GGE participants which included obstacle courses, drills, games, and swimming.

June - July:

GGE board members and staff completed a 20-hour self-defense class called IMPACT Basics, through Emerging Strategies (ES) because Strong girls need strong women!

August:

Call For Action! Help Save Title IX! Within our first year of beginning GGE, the Department of Education created the Commission on Opportunity in Athletics to review Title IX and recommend changes in its enforcement. GGE supported the Feminist Majority and Women’s Sports Foundation on a grassroots level by collecting 1000 signatures and letters from activists, school officials, community members and community-based organizations and sent them in a mass mailing and letter-writing campaign to Washington. Thanks to the efforts of our mama organizations and grassroots efforts, on July 11, 2003, the Department of Education announced that it would not act on any of the recommendations made by the Commission that would weaken Title IX.

December:

GGE began Gender Respect Workshops in PS 56. Five teacher trainings were held in Brooklyn schools PS 44, PS 56, and PS/IS 308 for 63 teachers, administrators and school staff on “Sexual Harassment” and “Title IX and Gender Inequality in Schools.
