Striving for Justice in an Unequal World
(Brooklyn, NY – August 1, 2007) The extreme heat and humidity wasn’t the only thing making people sweat in Brooklyn on July 28, 2007. Girls for Gender Equity’s Second Annual Gender Equality Festival pulled a crowd of over 400 attendees and 100 community organizations from throughout New York City, proving that the struggle for women’s rights is not only alive, but fierce as well. While some passersby yelled derogatory comments at the festival organizers and attendees, the event goers, both male and female, would not be deterred from the reason they were there: to celebrate girls’ and women’s rights and create strategies for further action to ensure equality.

“We tabled at the festival and had a great time. I found it to be very effective in getting the word out about our organization as well as networking with other organizations that were attending. I felt that it was very inspiring to see so many people working for the common good,” said Tara Sherry Torres, Volunteer Coordinator for RightRides for Women's Safety.

International Women's Health Coalition's Whitney Welshimer agreed, "I learned something from every group I spoke to." And Shawtieroc from Collaborative Movements added, "We enjoyed the energy of all of the empowered females."

We can’t forget that we fight for gender equity because women have the right to be safe and respected, whether the violence comes from a national radio host or a teenage boy we pass on the street. Girls for Gender Equity is a grassroots organization that advocates for the rights of girls and women by providing them with opportunities to live self-determined lives and organizing to affect social change. We can't forget that we fight for gender equity because women have the right to be safe and respected, whether the violence comes from a national radio host or a teenage boy we pass on the street. Girls for Gender Equity is proud to organize the Second Annual New York City Gender Equality Festival on July 28th 11am - 6pm at Von King Park in Brooklyn, NY Featuring performances by artists including singer/songwriter Pamela Means, hip hop artist Carlethal, Women's Project theater group, and spoken word poets Urban Word NYC, the Gender Equality Festival is a free public event for education, networking, resource sharing, community interaction, arts and recreation that is open to New Yorkers of all ages and genders.

"Despite it raining, over 200 people attended last year's festival. Everyone came because they recognize the importance of equity and justice for people of all genders. We're here to build a movement based on cooperation and coalition building, and to create a world where girls and women can live self-determined lives," said Mandy Van Deven, Associate Director of Girls for Gender Equity.

Over 70 community organizations will participate, offering workshops on a wide variety of topics - responding to street harassment, zine making, HIV/AIDS, self defense, youth leadership, online activism, responding to police violence, reproductive justice, and more. "NYC must come together to let everyone know we will not tolerate discrimination or abuse against girls and women in any form, any time, anywhere," says Oraia Reid, co-founder of RightRides. In addition to the activities, free food and prizes will also be given out to those who attend.
