“Dare to be uncomfortable. Dare to lead. Dare to be unbridled, brilliant, and loving.” -Alvin Starks, senior program officer at the Open Society Foundations and winner of our Liberated Gatekeeper award

On April 12, 2018, we celebrated fifteen years (and three-quarters) of work to end gender-based violence in all its forms. When we gathered at the Brooklyn Historical Society for our 15th Anniversary Gala, the young people we know will lead and win the fight began our program with musical selections that reminded us that we can be brave and glorious.

We then heard from Alvin Starks, Pamela Shifman, Margaret Gilliam, and Brittany Braithwaite, honorees who embody our mission. We sat at the edge of our seats as honorees Melissa Harris-Perry and Barbara Smith reflected on what truths are missing from movement strategies with Ruby Ramirez and Jadayah Muhammad, a current and a former member of our Young Women’s Advisory Council. We indulged in delicacies and drinks and danced the night away to the live sounds of Cheryl Pepsii Riley and her band, Hot Chocolate. To borrow MHP’s beautiful words, together, we were “human, lovingly human.”

And in that spirit, our community raised over $100,000 to continue our work of defending the humanity of all girls, young women, and gender nonconforming youth of color. We encourage you to check out photos from the evening on Facebook, we thank our guests for their physical support, and we thank all our supporters for their financial backing.

If you weren’t able to attend and would like to make a gift in honor of our 15th anniversary, you can do so here.

We’re looking toward the next 15 years with joy.
